In the workroom

9/16/2009

Still boring around here. I do have some big news but it will have to wait for awhile (no I am not pregnant), so for the rest of the week, random pictures of items in the craft room. Hopefully this blogging thing gets back on track soon, I feel lost lately and not sure how to express it properly.

See I still do make things!

7/02/2009

A month late and a dollar short but I finished my square for Amy in our quilt bee, sew connected.

I know need to get going on June's block, this summer is kicking my butt!

Anyone else feel like they are just spinning their wheels while the summer just zooms by?

Look I actually made something!

5/06/2009
Yes it is true I finally got to sit in front of my sewing machine again. Unfortunately both of these are for swaps and are a few days late but none the less I got some sewing done!

The blue and green log cabin square is for John, April’s Sew Connected recipient. I hope he likes it, I was so happy I got to work with some great iconic fabric.

And here is my doll quilt, for doll quilt swap 6. The binding once again turned out pretty wonky but this is to date my most ambitious quilt. I really hope my partner likes it and loves it for its unique qualities!

Substitute

4/29/2009

Since I haven’t touched my sewing machine in a month (and I need to get reacquainted with it I have a doll quilt and a block for my quilting group due soon) I am substituting my creative outlet with buying fabric that looks so good I could lick it! My newest love is Japanese fabric. I have no idea what I am going to use it all but for now as my machine stares at me and makes me feel guilty daily I advert my eyes to fabric goodness and I feel semi-less guilty.

There is a process

11/04/2008
I have a process to creating a new bag. I am sure every crafter has a process for anything they create. Today I would like to show how inspiration turns into prototypes which turns into an actual usable pattern.

So here we go:

First I find inspiration, this is normally done for me by going on to Flickr and streaming through the numerous handbag groups I am a member of. There is an infanite source of inspiration on Flickr, you just have to go out and look for it. I also like looking and seeing what people are selling on Etsy, I am bummed that you can no longer look at which items have been looked at the most, this always gave me idea at least which items where grabbing peoples attention. So I found this image on Flickr a few days ago:

Photo found here.

I loved the shape of the purse but the selling point for me was that the handle came up from the body of the purse with no seam line, something I hadnt done before but this bag gave me the drive to try.

So I went about drafting a pattern (sorry no pictures of this) I basically drafted the pattern using concepts I have learned from doing tutorials online and purse patterns that I have bought. If anyone is interested I will show you the silly way I draft my patterns, trust me it isnt very technical in ANY way.

I created two prototypes from this first pattern. I didnt take a photo of the first because it was a disaster, the bag shape was fine, it was the sewing that left me stumped, I searched online everywhere to try and find a tutorial for what I was trying to accomplish to no sucess. For some reason I was having a hard time wrapping around how I was suppose to turn out the bag. So I took out my hand dandy Japanesse craft books. I have a large collection of these thanks to trips I have taken to see Ken's family (San Diego & Hawaii) so I knew there had to be SOMETHING in there that could help me out and lucky for me there was. So prototype 2 was born (prototype #1 had been seam ripped so many times it was a lost cause to finish, poor prototype).

The bag turned out alright, but on a person it was way to skinny in the body. So I went back to the draft board (read my living room floor) and got to work drawing a new pattern. Make the body taller and a little less wide. Which led me to prototype 3 (drum roll please)

Ta-Da! It is a medium/large bag with the shape that I wanted. Plus thanks to the trials I have got a new skill done. Now I just need to crank out 20 or so of these bags in various vintage fabrics. (wish me luck!)

No post of course around here couldnt be without Leila so she volunteered to model while sharing in my joys of sucess.

And what better way to celebrate then an inpromptu picnic on the bedroom floor.

Happy Tuesday everyone, hopefully you made it to the end of this LONG post!!!

What I have been up to

9/24/2008
I know I have been touch and go these last few weeks. And for awhile it was mostly personal stress and such keeping me back. Lately though I have finally gotten my sewing grove back (as well as a sewing machine that works!). I have been sorely behind on purses and totes for two stores I sell on consignment to in Wisconsin so this past few weekends have been spent cutting and sewing.

This top photo might not show it very well but I am working on more fallish fabrics as well as a whole bunch of purses with corduroy (I love that stuff!) . I am also trying to get even more adventurous with my applique totes.

I know most seamstress have a system of how they get work done. When I am doing large orders I prefer to work like a factory line. I cut every piece at the same time. Sew all of the same parts in groups (outsides, lining, pockets). I always save the straps for last (I hate that part the most). And I finish all of the bags at once. The process is tedious but I like to get instant satisfaction in large amounts so when I finish 20 bags in a day it feels better than doing each one by one and finishing one or two in a day.
So here is hoping by the end of the week I will have large mosaics to share with all of my finished bags as well as shipping them off to the stores that really need them right now. (BTW if my vendors are reading this, thank you so much for all of your understanding, I appreciate it more then I will ever be able to express!)

Summer Loving

7/30/2008
I recently had signed up for a recycle swap. Basically we were supposed to create something with recycled materials. I have been insanely inspired lately by this blogger and wanted to create something similar to her vibe. This tote was made out of a table linen, some vintage sheets, and some old pants. Nice huh? Plus I couldnt choose from two different sheets so I appliqued both sides of the bag!

This may be the last thing I sew for awhile though, it was a nightmare to get my sewing machine to work correctly and since money is tight I may have to wait to get it serviced. Sounds like I may have to pull out my trusty first machine and hope I remember how the settings work!

How I spent my 4th of July Weekend!

7/08/2008

1. green sparrow, 2. red sparrow, 3. green deer totes, 4. 096, 5. colorful strips, 6. bedsheet tote 2, 7. cirlces, 8. teacups, 9. Cardinal, 10. doily, 11. red flower, 12. green flower, 13. owl upclose

My 4th of July was not spending time with friends and family watching fireworks nope my butt was in front of my sewing machine the whole day. And you know what? I wouldnt have wanted to spend it any other way. The rest of my weekend was spent with friends so all in all it was a great weekend. Also with these newest bags I got to play with appliques as well as free style patch work. I am hoping my next mass sewing spree will lead to some totes for in my Etsy shop but we will just have to wait and see. There is a craft show I am thinking about entering in for September too and if I get in I will have to start sewing now so that I have a big enough stock ready for the show.

Sorry about the slow posting and lack of "talking" I have been super occupied with work, being a momma, and trying to get in all of the summer heat I can!

What I have been up to

Working on updated some local stores. Next my etsy shop (hopefully). I am just curious how much would you pay for one of these bags? (Magnetic snap closure and interior pocket included in the bag size 13" wide 10.5" tall)

(psst sorry about the crappy photos stupid clouds)

Guess What?

4/30/2008

Gee... Based on my current flickr favorites can you tell what is on my mind? Bags maybe, and rounded bags to boot! Hopefully I will have some of my own to share soon enough! Till then eat up some of the crafty goodness, dont worry it is sweet but calorie free!

See my flickr account for credit (blogger was being stupid with my links sorry!)

Check... All done

I love doll quilts. they allow me to be creative and keep working on my hopefully improving quilting skills. Everything with this quilt was going along smoothly until I got full of myself and rushed the binding. Leave it to me to rush and mess something up. I hope my partner can look past the wonky binding because in all honesty this has been my best quilt to date. I just may have to make a similar one for Leila's babies.

Please forgive the horrible photos, also taken in a rush right before sunset. I hope my partner can get a few better pictures up of it. Oh and the embroidery? The pattern was bought at this etsy shop. She doesnt have one up for sale right now but I would say either contact her or wait a few days a new posting I would think would be up.

Now off to draft a few new purse ideas. Cant wait to attack those bad boys! The feeling of getting things accomplished is priceless!

Some more sewing was done this past weekend. And as a thank you gift I created those little pillows from some table linens. What do you think of the bag styles? I keep going back and forth on them.

Sewing mojo

4/14/2008

I lost my sewing mojo awhile ago, I was just too stressed to really do anything. I am happy to report it is back. I am however still having a tough time finding time when I have a goof ball in the house always screaming for her photo to be taken.

A crafty weekend

3/18/2008
My friend Rose came over for a weekend long craft-a-thon. Day one was sewing, she wanted to get some lessons on sewing so we made a tote she has been meaning to make for a friend for a long time. She brought the focal print, the super cute Japanese fabric, and the rest we pull from my stash. Rose was hilarious and commented that my craft room is like my very own craft store, aint she sweet!?!? As a thank you she gave me the left over fabric, seriously it is the best thank you gift I can think of!

Stay tune, tomorrow I will show you what I made on day two, paper crafting! (hopefully the sun cooperates so I can get a good photo because it is so worth a good photo!!!)

Third times the charm

2/18/2008

One day three bags. Not bad eh? Well these were all prototypes I had an image in mind mind and couldnt stop thinking about it so after two restless nights Sunday I settled down and starting sewing my heart out.

Now be easy these are prototypes so they arent perfect by ANY means, this one was a little TOO puffy and looked like a lima bean for me (plus its uneven and I wont even pretend that that was done on purpose!

Next bag I wanted to play with the top rim and got rid of the super puff, I also manually pleated this one the first one I did a basting stitch and pulled it to make it poof (does that make sense?)

Third bag the best of both worlds loved the rim from the top and loved the bottom from the second. So this will be my new design, it still needs a little tweaking (the opening is too small) but all in all I love it.

So there you have it, that is my process of trial and error. I love this fabric by the way and I got it super cheap so I dont feel bad using it on three bags I probably wont use for more than around the house. Leila should be happy though she has a thing for bags!

Would anyone be interested in a tutorial for the last bag? There was a big request for tutorials lately and this is one I havent seen a tutorial out there for though I didnt look very hard for one!

My favorite new tote

2/11/2008

Here is my newest tote. I love it almost to the point where I dont want to sell it but I will. What do you think of the tote? Love or hate, be honest it wont hurt my feeling.

what I have been up to

2/10/2008
I attempted my third craft show this weekend. And like each craft show it gets better than the next. I sold one more thing than the last and while I know I am no where near making a living off my dream I know that I am taking itty bitty baby steps to get there. I am not expecting an over night success nor do I want one.
I feel like the work and patience I need will make success that much sweeter, something I wont take for granted. This show was great for me, I met some other AMAZING artists and hopefully some great new contacts. Really you just have to get out there put your pride aside and have a great time which is what I did.

And the inspiration you get from a craft show is AMAZING especially one with crafters that are like minded it was absolutely amazing.

I just hope that they want me back for the next few show if they continue with I had a great day, snow and all.

Oh and these pincushions? They werent recieved as well as I would hoped, I absoultely love them, they are all made with vintage fabric and linen. They will be listed in my shop in the next few days a few at a time. E-mail me at artsymomma @ gmail.com if you want one before it's been listed. And later this week, a whole lot of tissue cozy love as well as a few totes I made especially for the show that I am in love with but cant keep since really how many totes can one girl have?

It's in the bag

2/06/2007
I recently created a purse for my best friend Katy. She has two little ones and with that comes a lot of baggage (pun completely intended) and she wanted a larger purse when she goes out.

I came up with this as the proto-type but I am not 100% sure about it. We are going to add pockets as well as a closure. I just recently won a few "vintage" purse patterns from e-Bay and I am going to take a look at them.

Otherwise I think a hobo bag would be better for her, looks small but really will hold everything that she needs to take with her when they go out.

I love this purse though it looks like something people would use to take a picnic to the park, and well, looking at it makes me feel warmer especially with our zero degree weather lately.

Additional decorating to be done

2/01/2007
For my workroom that is. As I have noted before I love to collect things and this is my newest thing that I have collected. Old fashion drawings. From what I can tell some of them are original hand drawings and some are hand drawings copied on to other paper. I love these drawings I was only able to get my hands on 6 frames that I plan on painting black this weekend (thank goodness for St. Vincents). I have such a huge stack of photos it was hard to find just 6. I am hoping that by this summer I will be able to have a wall full of these sketches to add as decoration to the sewing room.

This week has been rather disappointing as far as sewing has gone I havent been able to sew anything and have only cut out one purse. Leila has been in a terror of teething lately and is having a hard time taking naps lately. I love her to death but really cant wait for this phase to pass. In the mean time she is crawling up a storm and I am trying to keep two steps ahead of her vacuuming up a storm. If only we could replace the carpet with hardwood floors I would be in heaven.
Here is a fun contest that Kelly has started. I think this would be a great way for me to get into the valentine's day spirit.

Tax time: how to blow my money

1/31/2007
Yea! we are getting money back and now comes the fun part. Well actually here comes the dilemma do I do the adult and responsible thing and pay off some bills so that in the long run I will have more money to spend. Or do I do the thing we do every year and spend it frivolously?

Responsible me would do the following:

Pay a portion of Leila's outstanding medical bills
Pay off my smaller credit cards so we have those for emergency only
Pay off the furniture we bought this summer

Frivolous me:

Some sort of steam press
Contract out a website from Arianne
Spend a large chunk at reprodepotfabrics

While frivolous me will justify the purchases to responsible me by stating that these purchases are to help my business.

Stay tuned to see which voice wins in my head...
